Fort Travis was a military encampment created by the Republic of Texas on the eastern end of Galveston Island to protect the entrance to Galveston harbor. It was originally called Fort Point and renamed in honor of William B. Travis after the fall of the Alamo. The garrison was withdrawn in 1844. A second Fort Travis was installed across the harbor entrance on Point Bolivar, with construction beginning in 1898. It was occupied by soldiers during both world wars and declared surplus property in 1949. It is now a park owned by Galveston County.
