Harrisburg was a town on Buffalo Bayou, created in 1825 on lands owned by John R. Harris. It was home to a sawmill and served as a major port as well as the seat of the provisional government in 1835. During the Texas Revolution, the Mexican Army burned the town with only one residence surviving the fire. The town revived after the war and incorporated in 1839. The Buffalo Bayou, Brazos and Colorado Railway company built a terminus in Harrisburg, the first in Texas, and the town prospered until the railroad shops were destroyed by fire in the 1870s and were rebuilt in Houston. The town was formally annexed into Houston in 1926.
