Swartwout, Tex.

Swartwout is a small town in Polk County. It was laid out by James Morgan and the New Washington Association and named in honor of Samuel Swartwout. Early in its history it was home to cotton and corn warehouses and a ferry across the Trinity River. River trade kept the town viable until railroads became dominant, and the town was mostly deserted by 1875. Most of the original town is now under Lake Livingston.
