White Oak Bayou runs from north Harris County to its mouth on the Buffalo Bayou, running roughly parallel to Highway 290 and passing through Houston, hitting the Bayou just north of downtown. This area was the site of the original Port of Houston. To control flooding and improve water conditions, much of the Bayou was channelized in the late 1990s and early 2000s and the Houston Parks Board has made efforts to transform the Bayou into a greenspace.
