Brown was a naval officer in the Texas Navy, commanding several ships in the fleet. He was placed in charge of the Schooner Liberty for a brief period before taking command of a pair of Mexican prizes, the Comanche and Fanny Butler. He died in New Orleans in 1838 before he could take command of the privateer Benjamin R. Milam.
