Coit was a judge in Liberty County. Originally from Vermont, he came to Texas in 1835 and within a year was elected as the Chief Justice of Liberty County. He was appointed to guard the Mexican prisoners moved from Fort Travis on Galveston Island in October 1836. He died in 1846.
