Labadie was a physician and businessman. He was born in Windsor, Ontario in 1802 and moved to Missouri to enter the priesthood. After a few years he left the priesthood and studied medicine. He moved to Anahuac to establish a medical practice in 1831 where he served as the post surgeon before establishing a plantation on Lake Charlotte. During the Revolution he joined the main Army and became the surgeon for the regular army and tended to wounded after the Battle of San Jacinto. After the war, he moved to Galveston to practice medicine and open a pharmacy and general store. He acquired land at 26th Street on the wharf and opened Labadie’s Wharf, operating sailing vessels between Galveston and Pensacola, Florida. He also helped build the first Catholic Church on the island. He died in 1867.
