Lawrence was a soldier in the Texian Army. Born in North Carolina in 1800, he came to Texas in 1835 and was part of a group that went to Gonzalez answering William Travis’s call for volunteers. They arrived after the fall of the Alamo and joined Houston’s main army. Lawrence joined a cavalry company and fought at San Jacinto. He moved to Washington-on-the-Brazos after being discharged. He moved around Texas, living in Dewitt County, La Grange, and Lavaca County. He died in 1897, reputed to be the oldest living veteran of the Texas Revolution.
