Whiting was a newspaper publisher and printer. He was born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1799 and was an early settler in Texas, arriving in 1825 and settling near Liberty. During the Revolution, Whiting served as a loan officer for the Texas Navy and as a cavalry officer and supplied the garrison in Liberty holding Mexican prisoners. In 1837 Whiting was named the public printer for the Republic of Texas, publishing the laws and journals of the Texas Congress as well as the Houston Intelligencer. He moved his printing business to Austin in 1839 and started the Austin City Gazette and Austin City Bulletin. When Sam Houston removed the capital from Austin, Whiting became a vocal critic and lost favor in Texas. He moved to New York at the end of 1842 and died there in 1863.
