IdentifierMaps_277aDate1845DescriptionSandusky's plan was the official plat map published by the Galveston City Company to publicize the sale of Galveston lots. Sandusky finished the map in 1839, just one year after Groesbeck's survey (see no. 259). Sandusky followed Groesbeck's general layout for Galveston but changed the earlier plan in several respects. In place of three wharves and a large park on the harbor, he included four wharves. With minor variations the block and lot divisions are the same, but Sandusky used a different numbering system, one that is still in use today. He also moved the city cemeteries to their present location on the south side of Broadway between Fortieth and Forty-second streets. Notations include profiles of churches and public buildings and the names of prominent landowners - Gail Borden, S.M. Williams, T.H. Borden, M. Menard, T.F. McKinney, S. Slater, and J. Love. "Laffit's Old Fort" appears at Fourteenth and Water streets.
Sandusky's inset shows twelves feet of water over the outer bar. There is no sign yet of Pelican Spit. Groesbeck's channel between Fort Point and the main part of the island is now largely filled with sand. An "Old Fort," a "Sanderson's," and a "Bolivar" appear on Bolivar Point.
