IdentifierMaps_341aDate1871DescriptionReps identifies this panorama as the earliest bird's-eye view of a Texas city. According to United States census figures, the population of Galveston increased from 7,307 to 13,818 between 1860 and 1870. This happened in spite of virtual abandonment of the city during the Civil War and a yellow fever epidemic and a hurricane that occurred in Galveston in 1867. In addition, major fires destroyed five blocks in the central business district in 1869 and 1870; however, developers speedily replaced the simple wooden structures with substantial brick and iron buildings. Drie recorded the rapid development on this map, which is in striking contrast to the simple city reflected on the 1865 "rebel line of works" map. (See no. 332). There is, however, virtually no development yet along the Gulf shore, and Hitchcock's Bayou is still prominent. Eight wharves appear.

There are three known copies of this map: this example; one at the United States National Bank in Galveston; and one at the Barker Texas History Center. Little is known about Drie. John R. Hebert's catalog of bird's-eye views in the Library of Congress lists five by "C.N.Drie," dated 1872-1873. One, the view of Raleigh, North Carolina, was published in Raleigh and lists Drie as a Raleigh resident. Rep lists additional Drie views of Augusta, Georgia, and Columbus, Mississippi. Both Reps and Hebert feel that C. Drie is the Camille N. Dry who produced the 110-sheet view of St. Louis in 1876. Hebert also regards this Drie view of Galveston as the previously unlocated view mentioned by Pauline A. Pinckney (pp. 154-55) and attributed by her to J.J. Stoner. Although not listed in the imprint on this map, Stoner frequently worked with the printers, the Chicago Lithographing Co.
