IdentifierMaps_349aDate1874DescriptionIn the twenty years following the Civil War, Roessler produced sixteen county maps and several general maps of Texas (see also nos. 344 and 352). Roessler's maps are the only printed maps that preserve the results of the Shumard survey, the state's first geological and agricultural survey. Roessler worked as a draftsman for the survey in 1860-61, before the Civil War halted the work. During its brief life, the Shumard survey was under constant political pressure, and the importance of its work was questioned.
