IdentifierMaps_351aDate1875DescriptionThe map identifies the important sites and buildings of the city. Eight wharves appear, but three have disappeared since Labatt's map of 1869 (see no. 339). The city park on the harbor is absent, though Oleander Park, on the western city limits, is now shown. This park will disappear with the Denver resurvey in 1890.
The map indicates a breakwater, a quarantine station, and a fort on the eastern tip of the island. The completed breakwater is an early stage of the jetty system first proposed in 1867 (see nos. 340, 356, 429, and 447 for further information on the jetties). Smith must have drawn the map before the hurricane of September, 1875, since the document does not show the effect of the storm on the geography of the island's east end.
