The collection - Galveston Photographic Subject Files regarding Fires is an artificial collection gathered by staff of the Galveston and Texas History Center over the years. It consists of individual photographs, donated or found, and brought together under one subject heading. This collection consists of photographs of fires that occurred in Galveston from circa 1869 to 1885 and then in the 20th century. It includes images of the aftermath of the Great Fire of 1885. This devastating blaze destroyed 42 blocks and 568 homes, stretching from the commercial district on the Strand all the way to the beachfront. Also included are scenes of firefighters working to put out the blaze on the top floor of the Turf Athletic Club in 1948, and the Ufford Building in 1978.
