IdentifierMaps_425aDate1892Description Chartered in 1892, the Nottingham Company modeled their development after English industrial villages. The original plan of Nottingham appears here as a rectangle of eighty-five blocks, with the core area set aside for a lace curtain factory and associated industrial plants. The Galveston and Western Railroad runs along the south side of the factory site and bisects the town at a slight angle.
The company issued bonds in October 1892, and began operation by May 1893. The 1893 depression weakened the lace market, and in January 1894, the company defaulted on both the bond principal and interest. Trustees sold the property to one of the company officers. Although the new owner tried to operate the factory, by 1896 he, too, went out of business and sold the property for 10% of the original cost. Portions of the factory were then torn down. The hurricane of 1900 destroyed most of what remained. (Houston Archaeological Society Newsletter, no. 68, December 1980).
