The previous westward extension, from 53rd to 61st Street, had been completed in 1927 to accomodate the growth of the city. However, any further westward extension would not be approved until 1950 and would not be fully constructed until 1963. It is unknown if any of these plans were used in the construction of the 1950-1963 extension project.
