Tooley, "Maps in Italian Atlases," no. 86, lists eleven known copies of this second issue of L'Isole Spagnola. The first issue (1564), bearing the imprint of Paolo Forlani, Venice, is more common. Very few maps of the period depicted American areas, but Hispaniola was of special interest at this early date. Isabella, the site of the first European settlement in the New World, is on the north coast of Hispaniola and was a center of activity throughout the sixteenth century.
