IdentifierMaps_427bDatecirca 1892DescriptionThe South Galveston Land Company, chartered in 1891, purchased all of Hall and Jones section no. 8 on the western part of Galveston Island. The land company surveyed and plotted the section into blocks and lots, and named the area South Galveston. The proposed town was to be quite substantial, extending across the width of the island. It had a grid plan and radiating boulevards centered on "Alta Loma" park. The company also planned to build an electric railway, the South Galveston and Gulf Shore, to connect South Galveston with Galveston. Although some roadbed was laid, the railroad was never completed. The entire South Galveston project failed; today Galveston Island State Park occupies the site.
