IdentifierMaps_439bDatecirca 1895DescriptionIn the 1890s the North Galveston Association sought to develop this area north of Dickinson Bayou. The site had been known as San Leon (see no. 278) and Edward's Point, and it already had some buildings: in 1886 a post office, a church, and a daily stage line served the community.
This promotional map and an accompanying pamphlet, Nature's Choice: North Galveston, Texas (in the Rosenberg Library's manuscripts collection) tout the site as a fruit and truck-garden center. The town struggled in its early years. Heavily damaged by the hurricane of 1900, North Galveston never attained projected growth. By 1912 the town was again called San Leon (see no. 484); by 1959, the area had only approximately 100 residents, and it has never become a citrus fruit and truck farming center.
The map shows some of the tracks of the North Galveston, Houston and Kansas City Railroad, chartered in 1892. Sixteen miles of track were laid from North Galveston before this railroad was incorporated with the La Porte, Houston and Northern Railroad in 1895.
