Established in 1910, the community was one of several that arose on the railway between Galveston and Houston in the aftermath of the 1900 Storm. In the wake of increasing industrial development in the Galveston Bay area, plus several hurricanes and a fire, the community's demographics shifted from seaside tourists to petrochemical workers in the 1930s and 1940s.
