IdentifierMaps_16bDate1592DescriptionThis map is from part four of the Latin edition of De Bry's Grands et Petits Voyages, Frankfurt am Main, 1592. It was copyrighted by Casearece Matis. The map was included unaltered in all editions of Grands et Petits Voyages until 1630, when it was reengraved for the third Latin edition and given a new date (MDCCXXIV [1724]). This important late sixteenth-century map shows the two American continents as far north as the Carolinas. Garratt points out that the shape of South America is generally quite different from other sixteenth-century and early seventeenth-century maps. The configuration of Florida is based on Jacques le Moyne's map of 1591. The map gives approximately twenty-five place-names along the United States Gulf Coast, including "R. de S. Spirito," with a "Baia de Culata" at its mouth. Between this point and a river to the west that bears the name "R. Palmar" are five place names (east to west): R. de gigantes, Tagil, Malabrigo, C. Brauo, and Culias. The Church Catalogue 1:316-20 gives a good account of De Bry's Grands et Petits Voyages, including a census of the various editions.
