IdentifierMaps_55bDate1675DescriptionThis map is from Roggeveen's sea atlas, which was published in several languages and is known in English as The Burning Fen. The large Bahía del Espíritu Santo, so common on maps before the beginning of the eighteenth century, dominates the Gulf coast. The location of the bay near the point where the coast changes its orientation from due east-west to northeast-southwest corresponds closely to that of Galveston Bay. The Rio Grande appears clearly as "Rio Bravo." Eleven place-names are between that river and the Bahía del Espíritu Santo (east to west): "C. de St. Cruys," "Cabo de Zarto," "R. Montanbas," "R. Lasoo," "Costa Baxo," "R. Suela," "Plata," "R. Magdalena," "Cabo Blanco," "R. Descondido," and "R. Solo." The coastline north of the Rio Grande is called "Costa de Piscadores." The editors know of no previous Dutch chart that focuses so closely on the Texas coast. Koeman (Atlantes Neerlandici, 4:453) feels that Roggeveen's prototypes were Spanish portulanos prepared about 1665 and preserved in the collections of the East and West India companies.
