IdentifierMaps_87aDate1698DescriptionThis is a general map of the West Indies and the Gulf of Mexico. Koeman assigns a date of [1698] to this map (see Atlantes Neerlandici, vol. 5, Index, p. 279). It has the same basic configuration as the earlier charts of Goos (no. 49) and De Wit (no. 59), but it adds extensive interior detail and its treatment of coastal place-names is much fuller. Visscher gives seventeen place-names between a "Bahia del Spiritu Santo" and the "Rio Bravo" (east to west): "C. de Cruz," "C. Deserto," "Rio da Montanhas," "R. de Laso," "R. de Pescadores," "Rio de Oro," "C. de Arboledo," "R. Bravo," "Costa Baixa," "R. Suelo," "Plaia," "R. de Magdalena," "Costa deserta," "R. Escondido," "C. Blano," "Costa de Arboledas." "R. Solo." The "R. Escondido" is the river that La Salle identified with the Mississippi. It appears as a large stream that forms the boundary between "Florida" and New Spain (Mexico).

By 1698 this configuration was out of date.
