Carta Esferica que comprehende las costas del Seno Mexico

IdentifierMaps_1186aDate1799DescriptionSpanish Secretary of the Navy Juan de Langara directed the creation of this map - a major turning point in Texas coast geography - only two years after the creation of the Deposito Hydrografico of the Spanish Admiralty. The map is based on the 1783-1786 surveys of José de Evia, who had been working on the commission of Bernardo de Galvez, the Spanish governor of Louisiana. With majorly improved accuracy over any map of the Texas coastline thus far, this map thus became a foundation map of the Gulf Coast, with mapmakers such as Alexander von Humboldt and Aaron Arrowsmith using it as a basis for their own maps (see also Maps_193A, Chart of the West Indies and Spanish Dominions in North America, 1803). Significantly, this map was the first to depict Galveston Bay and give it its modern name ("Baie de Calvesion"), named by Evia in honor of Bernardo de Galvez. Matagorda Bay ("Baie de S. Bernardo") also appears. Galveston Island also appears in generally recognizable form, albeit unnamed except for a "Punta de Culebras" on the island's eastern end.Language NoteSpanishSubjectAlabama--MapsFlorida--MapsLouisiana--MapsMexico, Gulf of--MapsMississippi--MapsTexas--MapsCopyright StatementNo Copyright – Non-Commercial Use OnlySize58x91 centimeters.EngraverFernando SelmaCartographerDireccion Hidrografica de MadridJuan de Langara
